Essex County Council got in touch with us this month with a report of a mass fly-tip at Ladgrove Caravan Park in Writtle, Chelmsford. Our head of hazardous waste, Jason Cracknell headed the project from start to finish to finalise some options of how we could help remove the waste safely.
With the contents of the fly-tipping ranging from old tyres, broken toys, old electrical equipment, mattresses, freezers and general household furniture, it was important that the eyesore was cleaned up as quickly as possible, to stop any further environmental impact.
The land that the waste had been dumped onto what once was a children's play area, making the fly-tip even more heartbreaking to the local area. The proposal Jason discussed with the council was a two-stage process:
The project began with a lot of manual labour, sorting the woods, plastics and metals first to ensure the recycling method. Using our 8-wheeled grab lorries, we dismantled and removed the climbing frame first and then started to collect the rest of the waste. Once all the waste was removed, five of our waste operatives cleaned up the site leaving it fly-tip free.
In one day, in we removed 4.6 tonnes of waste, 3 tonnes of bulky waste on the grab lorries and three waste collection vans full. With the objective of recycling as much of the waste as possible, we inspected all waste removed from the site and processed it at our transfer station, with over 90% of the material being recycled and diverted from landfill.
