Hiring a skip is one of the easiest ways to get rid of waste, whether you’re clearing out your home, renovating a property or managing waste on a construction site. However, you can't throw everything into a skip.
Some items are strictly prohibited because they pose a serious fire, explosion, or safety risk, while others can be accepted but may incur an additional disposal charge.
Here’s our guide to what you need to know before filling your Dunmow Group skip.
The following items must never be placed in your skip or waste load:
Batteries and pressurised containers present a particularly serious risk within the waste industry. If they become damaged or crushed during collection or processing, they can cause fires, explosions, leaks and hazardous contamination, putting our staff, vehicles, waste facilities and the general public at risk.
Please check your waste carefully before your skip is collected.
Dunmow Group reserves the right to charge up to £1,000 per prohibited item found within a skip or waste load.
If you need to dispose of one of these items, don't put it in your skip. Call our team on 01245 466646, and we'll advise you on the correct disposal method.
Some waste can be placed in a skip, but it requires specialist processing or disposal and therefore carries an additional charge.
Chargeable items include:
Mattresses
Carpet, rugs and artificial grass
These materials may carry an additional charge due to the way they need to be processed.
Plasterboard
Additional charges apply if plasterboard is mixed with general waste. Dedicated plasterboard bags and skips are available if you have larger quantities to dispose of.
White goods
This includes washing machines, fridges, freezers and dishwashers.
POPs waste
Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) can be found in upholstered domestic seating, including office chairs, armchairs, sofa beds and sofas. This waste requires separate handling and disposal.
Vehicle tyres
All types of vehicle tyres are subject to additional disposal charges.
Wet plaster
Charges apply when wet plaster is mixed with general waste.
Paint tins containing paint
Paint tins that still contain paint require specialist handling.
WEEE waste
Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment includes items such as microwaves, televisions, laptops and monitors.
Tree stumps
Tree stumps over 150mm+ will be subject to an additional disposal charge.
If you know your skip will contain any of these items, speak to us before filling it so we can advise you of the applicable charges.
Do not place hazardous waste in a standard skip.
