Aluminium is the workhorse of the circular economy. Around 75% of all Aluminium ever produced is still in use today, and recycled Aluminium uses approximately 5% of the energy required to produce primary Aluminium from bauxite. [1] It is the second-most widely recycled metal in the UK after steel, and at the weighbridge it sits in a different commercial conversation from copper or ferrous: lower per-kilo than copper, but with substantially higher volumes from construction, transport, packaging, and increasingly from the post-Grenfell facade replacement programme that is reshaping the UK building stock through to 2035.
I have spent much of my career on the other side of the weighbridge, specifying, inspecting, fire-testing, alloy testing, analysing, and certifying Aluminium for buildings, including facade panels, ACP, solid Aluminium rainscreens, curtain walling, and architectural extrusions. That experience matters here because the difference between cast and extrusion grades, between Tata-grade clean-production extrusion and Tale-grade painted facade sheet, is exactly what determines whether a load arrives at our Chelmsford metals weighbridge as a high-value sale or a downgraded settlement. This article is for fabricators, facade contractors, demolition firms, electricians, plumbers, M&E specialists, householders, landlords, and house clearers who handle Aluminium in any form and want to understand how it is graded, why prices vary, and how to recover full value.
Aluminium is a non-ferrous metal that can be recycled indefinitely without loss of properties. It is lightweight (around one-third the density of steel), naturally corrosion-resistant due to a passive oxide layer, electrically conductive, and readily alloyed for specific applications. It is used in everything from beverage cans to aircraft fuselages, from curtain walling to overhead power lines, and from car engine blocks to window frames.
The defining test on the weighbridge is straightforward: Aluminium does not respond to a magnet, immediately distinguishing it from ferrous metals. From there, grading is based on alloy purity, surface condition, and any other materials attached. Two pieces of Aluminium that look identical in a skip can settle at very different rates per kilo because of the alloy series they belong to or the coatings and fasteners attached to them.
UK Aluminium scrap comes from a wide and growing range of sources: demolition arisings (window frames, curtain walling, facade panels), construction offcuts (extrusion stock from fabrication shops), end-of-life vehicles (engine blocks, wheels, body panels), packaging (beverage cans, foil), white goods, electrical infrastructure (overhead cable, busbar), and increasingly from the ongoing replacement of unsafe cladding on UK residential buildings.
UK scrap yards grade Aluminium using a combination of plain trade names (cast, extrusion, irony Aluminium, UBC) and the international ISRI specifications, now maintained by ReMA (the Recycled Materials Association). The ISRI codes are used in international trade and at refining smelters, and they are how Aluminium scrap moves from a weighbridge in Chelmsford to a remelter in Belgium, Germany or India. Yards use trade names with sellers and code words when trading the material onward. [2]

Knowing which grade your Aluminium is in is the foundation for recovering full value at the weighbridge.
An Aluminium remelter or refinery addresses a metallurgical challenge similar to that of a copper refiner, but with an added dimension. Aluminium is alloyed for performance, and the alloy chemistry of the recycled feedstock determines what the remelt can be used for. Clean 6063 extrusion can go straight back into new extrusion. Mixed cast Aluminium can be used for new cast products but cannot be easily converted into a wrought alloy. UBC can be produced more efficiently because the alloy chemistry is consistent across the input stream.
The remelter pays most for inputs that match its output specification with minimal sorting, fluxing or alloying. That is why Tata-grade new production extrusion sits at the top of the price ladder: it is single-alloy, clean and predictable. That is also why iron-alloyed Aluminium sits at the bottom: the steel content has to be magnetically separated from the melt, the slag has to be handled, and the recovered Aluminium may still be contaminated with iron at trace levels that affect the next product downstream.
In commercial terms: the cleaner the alloy and the lower the contamination, the closer the seller's price is to the live LME Aluminium price. That gap between clean extrusion and iron Aluminium is the value at stake for trade sellers who handle Aluminium in volume.
This is the section of the article I am best placed to write, as I have specified, fabricated and installed all three categories of facade panel that now form one of the largest single Aluminium waste streams in the UK construction industry.
The 2017 Grenfell Tower fire identified Aluminium composite material (ACM) and the wider ACP category, with a combustible polyethylene core, as a critical building safety risk. In response, the UK Government launched a series of remediation programmes covering all residential buildings above 11 metres with unsafe cladding: the ACM Cladding Remediation Programme, the Building Safety Fund (BSF) for buildings over 18 metres, the Cladding Safety Scheme (CSS) for buildings between 11 and 18 metres, and the Developer Remediation Contract, under which 45 of the UK’s largest developers have committed to remediate buildings for which they were responsible. [3]
The scale is substantial. As of mid-2025, 5,025 residential buildings 11 metres or more in height had been identified as having unsafe cladding, with industry estimates suggesting the true number across England may reach 12,000 once mid-rise buildings are fully surveyed. Only 30 to 48% of identified buildings had started or completed remediation. The National Audit Office estimates the total remediation cost may exceed £22 billion, and the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) modelling extends the completion date for the full programme to 2035. For Dunmow Group and any UK scrap operation handling construction waste, this is one of the most significant ongoing Aluminium scrap streams of the decade. Three categories of facade panel come down from these buildings.
Aluminium Composite Panels (ACP, including Grenfell-type ACM). Two thin Aluminium skins (typically 0.5 mm) are bonded to a polyethylene, mineral-filled, or fire-retardant core, with an overall thickness of 3 to 4 mm. The Aluminium content by weight is typically 30 to 50%, depending on the panel type. ACP cannot be remelted as a whole because of the polymer core. It must be processed: the Aluminium skins are mechanically separated from the core, and the Aluminium is graded as painted siding (ISRI: Tale) or, after thorough cleaning, as mixed old alloy sheet (ISRI: Taint/Tabor). The polymer core is sent to licensed downstream waste partners for energy recovery or material recycling.
Solid Aluminium facade panels (also known as solid Aluminium rainscreen). Single-skin Aluminium sheet, typically 3 mm thick, used as a fire-safe alternative to ACP in new builds and post-Grenfell replacements. Solid Aluminium panels are graded as Tale (painted siding) or as mixed old alloy sheet, depending on the coating system and volume. Solid panels have a higher Aluminium content by weight than ACP (close to 100%), making them significantly more valuable per panel as scrap.
Aluminium Curtain Walling and Architectural Extrusion. The carrier system behind the cladding, including transoms, mullions, brackets and pressure plates, is typically made from 6063 or 6082 Aluminium extrusion. When stripped clean, this grades as Tata (new production extrusion) or as clean extrusion, the premium Aluminium grade. Curtain walling demolition crews who separate the extrusion from the panel face and the structural steel back-up recover a materially higher rate than crews who mix everything into one skip.
For facade contractors and demolition crews working post-Grenfell remediation, the operational point is simple. Segregate at strip-out, not at the weighbridge. A facade strip-out that arrives at our Chelmsford metals facility with extrusion, ACP and solid panels in separate bays settles at three distinct rates, each at or near the top of its grade. A facade strip-out that arrives mixed settles at the lowest-grade rate applied to the whole load, because we have to process the lot as a single material until we can separate it. Across a typical mid-rise remediation project, the difference in settlement is significant.

For trade sellers, the question is rarely whether to segregate Aluminium, but rather how far to go. Five practical variables determine the answer.
1. Volume. A handful of Aluminium offcuts is not worth the segregation labour. A 40-yard RoRo of facade strip-out cladding is. The grade premium scales linearly with volume; the segregation effort does not.
2. Source consistency. A fabrication shop producing only 6063 extrusion offcuts has a single-grade stream that arrives at the weighbridge ready for the Tata rate. A demolition crew stripping a 1970s office block has a multi-grade stream that requires active on-site segregation to recover value.
3. Composition risk. Aluminium attached to steel is iron-Aluminium and settles materially lower. Removing the steel before weighing lifts the grade and the rate. The same applies to Aluminium fittings attached to copper (Talk-grade radiators) or to Aluminium with persistent coatings that compromise the alloy purity.
4. Live Aluminium price. The LME Aluminium price is less volatile than copper’s but moves with global demand for primary Aluminium and the cost of energy in primary production. When the LME price is high, the spread between clean extrusion and mixed scrap widens, and segregation pays back across more material types.
5. Storage and handling capacity. On a facade remediation site with stockpile space, segregated bins for extrusion, ACP, solid panels and iron/Aluminium are straightforward. On a domestic driveway, basic separation into clean and dirty Aluminium is realistic. On a tight commercial site, RoRo containers delivered to the right location at the right time make segregation possible where it otherwise would not be.
Rule of thumb for trade customers: if you generate Aluminium in any volume, segregate by grade at source. The cumulative annual price uplift across a facade contractor’s portfolio or a fabricator’s weekly output is significant, and this operational discipline keeps your paperwork clean for SMDA 2013 compliance.
Even sellers who believe they are presenting clean Aluminium often lose value due to contamination they have not spotted. The common offenders:

Every legitimate Aluminium transaction in England and Wales is governed by the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013 (SMDA 2013), which came into force on 1 October 2013 in direct response to a UK metal theft crisis, most associated with copper but also driving significant Aluminium theft from overhead power infrastructure, road signage and irrigation. Within a year of the Act, British Transport Police recorded an 80% drop in railway-cable theft incidents and associated delays, and Aluminium theft from overhead distribution networks followed a similar trend. [6][7]
Four core requirements apply to every legitimate Aluminium transaction:
Aluminium poses a different theft risk from copper. Its per-kilo value is lower, so opportunistic theft is less common, but the volumes involved in Aluminium infrastructure (overhead cable, road signage, irrigation pipe, facade panels) make organised theft economically viable. SMDA 2013 applies equally to Aluminium and copper, and reputable yards inspect and verify Aluminium just as carefully.
Aluminium theft is less publicly visible than copper theft, but it has its own established patterns in the UK.
ACSR overhead power cable. Aluminium Conductor Steel Reinforced (ACSR) is the standard for high-voltage overhead distribution and transmission lines in the UK. The Aluminium content is high, and theft from energised lines is extremely dangerous, with documented fatalities among thieves. National Grid, the DNOs and BTP collaborate to investigate and prosecute. [10]
Road signage and road furniture. Aluminium gantry signs, motorway gantries, bollards and street signs are frequent targets, particularly when Aluminium prices are high. Highways England (now National Highways) maintains a register of stolen signage and works with Essex Police and other forces on enforcement.
Agricultural and irrigation infrastructure. Aluminium irrigation pipe, livestock equipment and farm gates are targeted at isolated rural sites for the same reasons fly-tipping targets rural Essex (under-policed, accessible, isolated). The Country Land and Business Association (CLA) has documented this pattern across the East of England.
Post-Grenfell ACP stockpiles. This is a relatively new pattern. Strip-out projects generate large volumes of ACP and solid Aluminium facade panels, which are stockpiled on site or at remediation contractors’ yards prior to disposal. The Aluminium content of ACP is moderate, but the volume is significant, and stockpiles have been targeted at a number of sites across the UK. Insurance, site security and chain-of-custody documentation under SMDA 2013 are the operational measures.
In every case, the legislative framework is identical. A legitimate seller’s protection comprises a licensed dealer, a calibrated weighbridge, verified ID, electronic payment and a complete transaction record. Cash deals with unlicensed collectors leave the seller exposed.
At a properly run facility, the process is the same every time. If a buyer skips a step, it is your signal that something is wrong.
This audit trail protects both parties under the SMDA 2013 and gives the seller confidence that the grades and weights on the ticket are exactly as paid for.

For domestic and one-off sellers, separating clean from dirty Aluminium and removing obvious steel attachments before weighing is usually sufficient.
In each case, what matters is weighing at a licensed, calibrated, professionally run facility, with valid ID, traceable payment, and a ticket that breaks the load down grade by grade.
